Dogs
Educating the Community about Mushing & Sled Dogs
2007
This year we had a very special on-site
kennel visit. One of the local Girl Scout troops and Senator Sharon
Erickson Ropes visited for a day of education about sled dogs, the sport of
mushing, & dog care. They were treated to lots of loving from the
dogs, cupcakes and hot cocoa...we couldn't have asked for a more beautiful
day: 45*F, bright sunshine and no wind!!
Everyone got to see how the dogs travel to & from races/training Are you ready to meet the kennel?

Boomer loves the extra
loving...
Checking out some of our extra warm
gear
Gus, hard at work
Aaron showing the warm mitts and the girls got to try some of them on! Where the musher rides...and hangs on! Learning sled basics & gear
"Make like a tree."--showing the girls how a snub-line works. The Senator looks like she's ready to go for a run--hang on!!
Meeting the entire kennel
one-on-one.
Gus demanding more attention...and getting it, though Mariah wants her fair
share too!
Chester just adores visitors.
Sam & Gus showing how handsome they are Bugs (June) & Johnny like Alicia's attention Lotse gets a well-deserved belly rub
Sam, being...well...Sam. It's
all about the belly
rubs.
Showing the group how big a 16 dog team really is...at the time of this visit
the Iditarod
was just starting. The girls all took positions on the "team" as
demo-dogs.
Sam & Gus getting more belly
rubs...kinda pathetic, aren't
they? Johnny & Bugs &
Alicia
Lhotse giving a nose kiss.

Jäger is still a momma's
boy.
Senator
Ropes
What a great group! Everyone had tons of fun, and so did the dogs!
Aren't the cupcakes cute? (They were delicious too!)
**Special
thanks to our sponsor, Gwen Reiss from The Turtle Dove Tea House. She took
care of catering this event with the cupcakes and
hot cocoa with marshmallows & the photography!**
2005
During Iditarod
week we take a few dogs from our kennel to make a visit to the Spring Valley
Kingsland Elementary School. It gives the kids a real "hands-on"
experience with sled dogs--the kids get to see and touch dogs while they are
learning about Iditarod and it's history. Each one of the kids has a
rookie musher that they follow daily during the race!
The kids came outside to see the truck, the dogs and learn
more about the sport of mushing. The kids all had a great time--they were
also happy to get out of the classroom! The dogs also had a great
time--they loved the extra attention from the kids.
The dogs that participated at the school are: Zeus,
Mariah, Gus, Boomer, Bailey, Samurai & Lhotse
Mrs. Toews 2nd grade class
Mrs. Boyd's 5th grade class

That's a long string of "dogs"! The 5th graders hooked themselves up to the gangline to see how big a 16 dog team really is.
